Valdés breaks Miguel Reina’s record

In Prague, the goalkeeper has broken the club record for going unbeaten that dated back to the 1972/73 season, 824 minutes. Pep Guardiola, Leo Messi and Alexis Sánchez were also protagonists tonight.
Valdés breaks Miguel Reina’s record
Víctor Valdés is now the FC Barcelona goalkeeper who has gone the most games without conceding a goal. Following nine clean sheets, he has now gone unbeaten for 877 minutes, more than the 824 minutes established by Miguel Reina in the 1972/73 season. As the game ended 4-0, Valdés can still extend his incredible record.

Monumental save

2011-11-01_PARTIDO_28.JPGHe had to work to earn that record though. In the 16th minute Viktoria’s Petrzela was through on goal and Valdés came out better in a one-on-one situation. That save could have changed the course of the match, for shortly after Cisovsky was sent off for a penalty offence.

Not since Pablo Hernández scored against him at Mestalla in the 23rd minute of the Valencia v Barça match has Valdés been beaten, and he has since kept clean sheets against all of Atlético Madrid, Sporting, Racing, Sevilla, Granada and Mallorca in the League and BATE and Viktoria (twice) in the Champions League.

Guardiola and Messi make 200, and Alexis back

Other names involved in the win in Prague were Pep Guardiola, Leo Messi and Alexis Sánchez. The coach was in charge for his 200th match, where he was able to enjoy the 144th win and 500th goal. The Argentinian scored goals 200, 201 and 202 of his Barça career in his second consecutive hat-trick. And the Chilean was back in action after an absence of a month and a half through injury.

Josep Guardiola gets to 200 games

Tonight the FC Barcelona manager has been on the bench for the 200th time since arriving at the club. He has won 72% of the games and seen his players score 500 goals.

Josep Guardiola will manage the team for the 200th time in Prague tonight, only the fifth time a Barça manager has reached that figure. But none have such an extraordinary win rate as he does – in fact, his statistics are quite simply stunning, as we show here:

► 72% wins: Of the last 200 matches, Barça have won 143, drawn 39 and only lost 17. That 72% is somewhat better than the achievement of the second man in the list, Helenio Herrera, who managed a 70.6% win rate in 143 games. Next comes Ferdinand Daucik (60.7% wins in 150 games), Frank Rijkaard (58.6% wins in 273 games) and Johan Cruyff (58.1% wins in 430 games).

► Only 17 losses: Of these 200 games, Guardiola and his players have only lost 17, two of which came at the end of the 2008/09 season when the league title was already in the bag. This season, the team has not lost any of its 17 official matches.

► 500 goals for: There has been plenty of action in these games. The team has almost scored half a thousand goals, 500 to be precise. That’s an average of 2.50 goals a game. Leo Messi, with 160, is the highest goalscorer under Guardiola.

2011-10-19_PARTIDO_07.JPG► Nearly 100 goals in Europe: Of these, about a fifth have been in European matches. Barça have scored 99 goals in 44 Champions League matches, the most productive season being 2008/09 (36 goals in 15 matches).

► 143 goals against: The Barça defence has also been fantastic, leaking just 143 goals (0.71 per game), and in the Liga (84 goals conceded), this has been enough to ensure Víctor Valdés won three consecutive Zamora Trophies.

► 306 points in Liga: When it comes to points won in the league, Barça are clearly record breakers under Guardiola. In 124 matches, the side has collected 306 points. Guardiola finished his first three seasons at the club with 87, 99 and 96 points respectively, which was always enough to win the title. This season, they already have 24 points.

► 12 titles out of 15: The 200 games have involved Guardiola’s side winning 12 titles out of the 15 that were at stake. These were 2 Ligas, 3 Spanish Supercups, 2 Champions Leagues, 2 European Supercups, one Clubs World Cup and one Copa del Rey” - Barca have won three ligas.

carles puyol

Something about THe Best DEfender...

Carles Puyol is the “enfant- du-pays” dream come true. The Catalan defender began his career with La Pobla de Segur as a goalkeeper when he was a kid, but he was soon forced to switch his position to become a striker. FC Barcelona called him in 1995, when he joined the Blaugrana’s youth team. In 1999, first team Louis van Gaal made him debut in La Liga championship. During his first years, he was considered most of all a right back. But when Frank Rijkaard came in, he found a new dimension as centre back. And he becomes one of the best in the world (Best European centre back in 2005, 2006, 2008 and UEFA Club Best Defender in 2006).

At the end of the 2003-04 season he became FC Barcelona captain, after Luis Enrique’s retirement and on 16 September 2008 he made his 400th appearance in all competitions for the Spanish giants. Now he is the third player with more official matches with more than 500, surpassing legend Carles Rexach. The time is passing, but Puyol is always a regular for new manager Pep Guardiola. Even if sometimes is forced to play on the left flank. As an International player, he won his first cap on 15 November 2000 against Netherlands and he is still a regular. His highest moment seemed to be Euro 2008 triumph, when he was named in the Team of the Tournament. But in the 2010 World Cup he played even better, also scoring the decisive goal in the semi-final won against Germany. He announced he will play for la Roja until 2012 Euro Cup.

In 2006, Puyol said that when not working, he leads "a very quiet life... I've not been to a nightclub in Barcelona for years either. When I go out, I stay in a restaurant with my friends." He practices yoga and Pilates, and according to a friend, Thubten Wangchen, is highly interested in Tibetan Buddhism and culture. Puyol met the Dalai Lama in 2007.
His father, Josep Puyol, died in a farming accident in 2006 while Carles was on his way to play a match against Deportivo de La Coruña. He was informed by coach Frank Rijkaard upon landing". He has said that this combined with an injury led to a dark period. Spanish National Team physio, Raúl Martínez, came to Barcelona and in Carles' words "gave me a great telling off. He made me react, and I began to try to be more cheerful, and not overwhelmed by it all."
In 2009, Puyol told Goal.com: "I do not like to go out much, although it is good to disconnect and I like to read." His musical tastes include the band Napalm Death. In the TV show 'crackovia', Puyol has a sheep called Queca. The animal they gave him is a sheep because of his long curly hair.
Puyol's long shaggy hair has been a distinctive feature throughout his career. Louis van Gaal, who at the time was the FC Barcelona coach, suggested he get it cut when Puyol was 19, Van Gaal had already made clear his feelings about Puyol when, after his first training session with the senior players, he called the defender, then 19, into his office. "What's your problem, can't you afford the money for a haircut?" Van Gaal asked him. "I said nothing," Puyol remembered, "and to this day have kept my hair as it is.".

He's been in a relationship with Spanish model Malena Costa since September 2010. They were first seen together in an Alejandro Sanz concert in Barcelona, a month later Puyol confirmed the relationship on October 16, 2010 at Camp Nou dedicating his winning header against Valencia CF (2-1), by making a heart symbol with both hands. “I dedicate the goal to my girlfriend,” said Puyol after the game. On November 5 they made their first public appearance at the Cirque du Soleil’s show ‘Varekai’ in Barcelona. They have been rumored to have planned a wedding but Puyol immediately denied such stories.

Did you know?
- He made his first team debut in 1999 under Louis Van Gaal, when visiting FC Barcelona beat Valladolid 2- 0.
- Apart 3 appearances with Catalunya, since his professional debut (1999) he only played for FC Barcelona and Spain.
- When he was promoted from FC Barcelona “B team” is position was right back.

From thrashing Real Madrid 5-0 to putting eight past Almeria - the game-by-game guide to Barcelona's title win

Barcelona are the champions of Spain for the third consecutive season after picking up the point they needed against Levante to secure the crown with two matches still to play. Catalunya will be a cacophony of noise as the locals celebrate their superiority over the rest of Spain once again.

The title is the 21st in the club's history, and while Real Madrid remained in hot pursuit for much of the season, there seemed little doubt that Pep Guardiola's band of exceptional talents would eventually get their hands on the coveted trophy.

The benchmark was set in the now-infamous 5-0 annihilation of Madrid in November, a match which will forever be remembered as a defining moment in a season that brushed with perfection.

The likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta were able to maintain the consistency that had helped clinch the World Cup in South Africa, and were pivotal in the team's success. But the incomparable, irreplaceable Lionel Messi reached new echelons of brilliance in 2010-11, blasting past the 50-goal barrier in all competitions, while producing numerous assists for attacking comrades David Villa and Pedro Rodriguez.

Below we take you through Barcelona's season round-by-round, highlighting their noticeable peaks and occasional troughs in a memorable campaign.
